The purpose of groundwater protection standards is to safeguard the health, safety
and welfare of the citizens of the town. This is accomplished through ensuring the
protection of the principle source of water for domestic and agricultural use. The
availability of adequate and dependable supplies of good quality water is of primary
importance to the future of the town. Therefore, standards are described in this division
with the intent of protecting both the quantity and quality of the groundwater supply.
It is further the intent of this division to control development, in and adjacent
to, designated wellheads to protect water supplies from potential contamination. The
public interest test shall be applied in determining whether, and the extent to which,
a proposed development or occupational use must be located within the wellfield protection
area.
